FB Motivation

And FB = Facebook (if you were wondering about the acronym)

The inspiration to write this newsletter came from a Facebook friend. I had posted this on my FB page last week: Went for a run today...it's been weeks since I ran. First 15 minutes all I could think was "I'm tired...I'm tired...I'm tired". Stopped to stretch and after a few deep breaths actually heard the birds singing. Plugged into the beautiful day and ended up having a GREAT run! Hope your day rocked:)

And that post prompted a FB friend to post: You give me some inspiration Rhonda! I am starting to get back into the exercise world after having the twins and I'm having a hard time getting motivated. Maybe I just need to get plugged into the simple things to start me off and keep me on the right track.

Hmmm...apparently sharing our struggles can motivate one another. Not in a twisted "laugh-at-my-pain" kind of way. But in a "we all face challenges" kind of way.

Now you can read about the struggles and BIG gems of another client with the BIG gem blog post - But I thought I was empathetic!

A BIG welcome to new readers from the Penticton Tourism Community Consultation and the Leisure Development Course held at Silver Star (yes even the hilarious student who publicly mocked me....read more in the article to the right).

Here's to a summer filled with FOCUS and ACTION. Focus on one. Act on one. Just one BIG gem at a time. This is the year to stop TRYING to be what you want to be and start DOING it!

Motivation de-mystified and mocked

BIG gems to help you get off your butt and DO what you've been TRYING to do

Have you ever been mocked...publicly? I mean a real, full-on mocking. When someone you hardly know talks like you, wears your jewellery, and even dances like you for the amusement of an audience? This was my first time. It was humbling. And gut-bustingly hilarious!

It was the culmination of 3 days teaching a group of sport and recreation staff about motivation at a program on Silver Star Mountain. When I was hired for the gig I asked Chris, the organizer "You want me to teach a bunch of fitness folks how to be motivated?" What could I teach them that they didn't already know? It was a daunting task.

Imagine you were handed a daunting task. Where would you turn?

Maybe, like me, you'd turn first to what you already know. I combed through my keynotes and workshops. I was thrilled to see that motivation was weaved into the crevices of each one. I'm no fitness expert. But after 10 years of coaching, I'm an expert at uncovering people's personal motivation...so they can stop TRYING and start DOING.

Braced for the daunting challenge I dove in. I'm going to share the BIG gems of the workshops I customized for this group in the next few newsletters. Today I'll share the BIG gems from day #1 at Silver Star:
- Motivation is not mystical. It's an emotion. It's about feeling strong, energized and interested.
- That is the exact definition of a strength that Marcus Buckingham uses in "Go Put Your Strengths to Work". Read it if you want more built-in motivation for your job. And if you want a few tips on parenting or leading others to grow their strengths.
- Now think of an activity that makes you feel strong: confident and in the flow
- Think of an activity that energizes you: so when you finish you have more energy than when you began
- And think of an activity that makes you feel interested: something you eagerly look forward to

If you want motivation to tackle the BIG important things of life and work first do a few activities that make you feel strong. You'll feel strong, energized and interested again. That will actually GIVE YOU the motivation to tackle the tough stuff. You CAN do this!

[Pssst...if those strength activities which normally jazz you up feel overwhelming today, do what I do. Take a nap. It's nearly impossible to muster motivation when we're exhausted - physically, mentally or emotionally.]

And finally, to the student who delivered the full-on mocking at Silver Star Mountain - my ego has recovered...and you ROCK!

Remember...focus on one. Act on one. Just one BIG gem.

Make it a great summer!
