Between the Posts

Perspective from the kitchen sink

I leaned against my kitchen sink. It was a cloudy Tuesday in February, 2 years ago. My work day hadn’t started yet. It was 11am. I leaned on the kitchen sink in my wrinkly pajamas, by newborn daughter Sarah moaning from her bassinet across the room. My 3 year old son Isaac calling my name again and again as he clung to my leg. From the sink I could peer through the dining room to my office. On the desk in my office sat an enormous project. It beckoned to me. As did the pile of phone messages and emails awaiting response.

I thought about the goal posts ahead of me. Only 2 hours until the babysitter arrived and I could start picking at that project and pile of work. Only 9 days until the project was due to my client. Only 18 years until the kids moved out!

That’s when it hit me. I had my sites fixed on the goal posts. But all that stuff in between the posts...that was my life.

I cried in the kitchen sink.

And then I remembered what I really want: relationships, fun, meaning, impact.

I cranked up the hip hop music and danced with my kids. I called my colleague for help with the project. I shifted focus to what’s between the posts!

So all the B.S. aside, what do you really want? What’s in between the posts?
